SUPPORT OUR SCHOOLS (SOS) PROGRAM
We have registered with Gilbert’s Fresh Market, Southlands to be part of the Support Our Schools Program. Please sign up with them and for every purchase you make in store, 1% of your purchase spend will be donated to the school. It does not cost to sign up, and it’s an easy way for you to support the school. To date, over $1000 has been raised just from supporters shopping at Gilbert’s.
You can still be supporting the school throughout the summer holidays.
YEARBOOK 2020
The 2020 Yearbook will be distributed around week 5 of Term 1, 2021.
This allows more of the activities held in Term 4 to be included in the publication.
TEACHING STAFF LEAVING OUR SCHOOL
Each year, we bid farewell to a number of staff who have completed their contracts. We are acknowledging a number of teachers who have been with us for a considerable period, but thank all staff for their contribution to the students of this school.
HELEN FUKUMOTO
Helen has worked as part of our Languages team for three years. Her expertise has seen her fill a range of roles. Specialising in EALD at ATAR level, teaching Japanese in the lower school and coordinating the OLNA support program for EALD students, Helen has worked with students in various programs. In 2020, Helen also worked as part of the Learning and Curriculum Support team, teaching Literacy classes in Year 8 and 9.
Helen is a positive and flexible colleague and we hope to work with her again in the near future.
RACHEL HARRINGTON
Rachel came to Willetton as a committed, hardworking technologies teacher straight from the UK. Her passion and skills with the holistic welfare of the students soon became evident and on achieving her permanency at Willetton, she became a crucial member of the student services team.
Rachel is not only a staff member but also a little sister, surrogate daughter and friend to many of us. Her boundless energy and enthusiasm for learning has meant that she has had the opportunity to fly the nest of her Willo family and spread her wings in new pastures.
We will miss her dynamic presence but wish her all the best for her new adventure at Ocean Reef who are fortunate to have her as part of their Level 3 Program Coordinator team.
HAYLEY BETTERMAN
Hayley Bettermann (a former student of this school), has been a highly professional teacher in the Humanities and Social Sciences for the past 15 years.
Hayley has been a great inspiration to many of her colleagues and has been a productive, supportive and efficient second in charge in the learning area. While at Willetton Senior High School, Hayley gained her level 3 classroom teacher status as an exemplary teacher and has been a WACE marker for Modern History.
She will be greatly missed and we wish her all the very best in her new promotional position at Harrisdale Senior High School.
EDDIE COLLINS
Eddie came to Willetton Senior High School from retirement three years ago to fill a position in Technologies left vacant by a staff member on sickness leave. He stepped in midway through the year and performed admirably in difficult circumstances and successfully completed the year. Eddie remained in this position for a further two years, and we are very grateful for his contribution. He moves back to retirement and more golf.
GRACE HAMILTON
We farewell one of the rising stars in the Science Learning Area; Miss Grace Hamilton. Since arriving as a graduate in 2015, Grace has become a highly valued member of the whole school staff as well as science, and her expertise as an ATAR Chemistry teacher has been most appreciated.
Grace will be greatly missed. We wish her well in her new appointment to Cape Naturaliste College, which just happens to be conveniently located close to the wonderful Margaret River Region.
The following staff retired during 2020 and we wish them every happiness in this new phase of their lives:
Marie Law
Diana Nelson
Ian Donaldson
Marilyn Onishi
Patricia Worthington

MATHEMATICS SUCCESS
HAVE SUM FUN ONLINE
A number of our students competed in the Have Sum Fun Online Mathematics competition this year. Students organized their own teams and competed after school for three weeks.
We had eight Year 7 teams, three Year 9 teams and two Year 10 teams.
The Year 10 teams both performed exceptionally well. From 32 teams around the state, one of our Year 10 teams came in first place and each member will receive a $25 gift voucher. Congratulations to Ian Pinto, Farhan Ahmed, Samuel Sundara Rajan and Allan Wu.
Our second team with Brian Chan, Zhi Ren Loke, Myles Boeve ́ and Nethmi Nikagoda came in equal second and were only pipped by a team from Hale who completed all three rounds in a faster time. Congratulations to these students who finished with a ranking of third.

POETRY WINNERS
Congratulations to Kate Graham (Year 12) and Sarah Abed (Year 10) who have been recognised for their outstanding creative writing.
Sarah won First Prize for her poem The Belt and the Shoe and Kate Graham’s poem Country was Highly Commended. Both prizes were awarded by the WA Poets Association at the launch of Primo Lux in Fremantle on 7 December.
Primo Lux is a Western Australian student poetry anthology published annually and supported by WA Poets Inc. The anthology is a celebration of creativity in literature produced by youth who are skilled imaginative communicators. Each year, hundreds of young poets from schools across WA submit their works for consideration.
Willetton had a total of nine students who had their poems published in this year’s anthology. Thank you to the English teachers who supported their students in their creative writing and submitted their poems for publication.
